Some words from me and my work
My work is human-centred. My inspiration is the motion and bright color of the urban scenery and the routine of city life, which are covered by ample Greek light. All my paintings have been painted in daylight, which symbolize hope and optimism for a new beginning.
Yiannis Christakis (art historian)
Seeing the work of John Dakos, the spectator discovers the artist’s love for color, motion and light at a first glance. One can detect the different tensions and contradictions of light, color, space, density. He is interested in man, motion and the routine of city life. The city characters appears small and diminished in the labyrinth of the city and human presence.
3. KATYA KAN
Having caught a glimpse of the ex-USSR, she have a nostalgic, conflicting perception of political and cultural systems. Unable to fully assimilate into any one culture, sheI find herself as an outsider with an eclectic artistic taste. The concepts, which I explore in my work, include the globalization, surveillance, nostalgia, utopia and eroticism. In her artwork, she combine detailed, stylized portraiture with abstract, ornamental elements in the background, taking inspiration from the work of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Her most recent selection of pen and pencil drawings investigates the utopian world of communal erotic experiences in the context of ritualized ceremonies and stylistically influenced by the Art Nouveau British artist, Aubrey Beardsley. As an artist, she similarly delve into the realm of independent cinema, incorporating digital, 16mm and 2D animation. Some of the directors, whom she respect, include the Maya Deren, Steven Soderbergh, Andrei Tarkovsky, Wong Kar-wai and Kathryn Bigelow. She currently editing a medium-length feature, which comes to terms with my inability to remember certain positive emotions from my childhood prior to the age of seven years old, which I spent in Almaty, Kazakhstan, as a result of immigration. Another film project in my pipeline is an experimental documentary, consisting of digital and 16mm film and revolving around the contemporary UK Wicca religion. 4. EKATERINI KOLIAKOU She is from central Athens, Greece, and is based mostly in London. Her work has been exhibited since she was a student, and has been shown in both Europe and the USA. She has lived in various countries which has influenced her work dramatically. Her use of strong colours and powerful themes reflects the energetic dialogues she has with her encounters. Ekaterini sees her paintings, drawings and video work as the process of a diary. Working both figuratively, abstraction and words she gives a sense of intimacy and yet they are never confessional. In various techniques from using brushes to using her hands, the painted surface shifts between articulated brush strokes to playfully primitive impulsive mark makings. Her subjects are often naked to allow a sense of honesty and equality. Her work is sensual and cynical, provocative but gentle. Ekaterini started her studies in 1987 in Vakalo Art and Design college then continued with black & white photography at Focus Athens, Greece. She moved to London for the foundation course of Art and Design in Kingsway College until 1993 and then continued at the Fine Art Academy Aldo Galli Academy in Como, in 1995 Acamedy of Fine Art Brera in Milan until she finished her studies at theFine Art School of Athens and practiced her Erasmus in the Fine Art School, Utrecht in 2001. She graduated with a distiction. |
